Appreciation 1 - Leisure Poem Appreciation

Poem and poet: ‘Leisure’ by William Henry Davies.

Theme: The poet regrets that ours is a poor life if it is full of cares and worries and we have no time to appreciate and enjoy the beauty of nature.
Tone: Serious and analytical; reflective poem.

Structure and stanzas: The stanzas are of two lines each; seven couplets with lines of equal length.

Rhyme and Rhythm: The rhyme scheme is aa, bb, cc, and so on, with the ending words of each couplet rhyming.

Language and Imagery: The language is simple; the poem has many figures of speech and is full of imagery when the poet describes the beauty of nature.

Figures of Speech: Alliteration, Personification, Simile, Metaphor, Repetition, Interrogation.

Figures of speech are used to add beauty to normal expressions because each figure of speech has separate meaning which is different than the normal meaning of the words.

The poem Leisure has following figures of speech :

1. Personification:
A. And watch her feet, how they can dance?
B. No time to wait till her mouth can enrich that smile her eyes.

The above given lines are the example of personification. Because inanimate things shows human attributes.

2.Alliteration:
A.We have no time to stand and stare.
B.Streams full of stars like skies at night.

The above given lines are the example of alliteration, because one particular sound is repeated at the beginning of the words.

3. Simile:

A.Stream full of stars like skies at night.
B. And stars as long as ships and cows.
The above given lines are the example of simile as there is a direct comparison between two different objects.

4. Metaphor:

A.No time to turn at beauty's glance.
B. And watch her feet how they can dance.
The above given lines are the example of Metaphor as there is implicit  comparison between two different objects.

Appreciation 2 - Leisure Poem Appreciation

Poem Leisure by W.H. Davis is about importance of leisure in man’s life.

The poem consists of seven couplets. In the first couplet the poet says if a man has no leisure in his life than it is full of cares.

In the second couplet he says a man who has no time to stand idly under a shady tree and stare at cows and sheep grazing, that man’s life is full of burdens and tensions.

In the third couplet he says a man who has no time to see the beauty of woods such as watching the squirrel hide nuts under grass while he is passing through it, then his life is full of cares.

In the fourth couplet the poet says a man who is too busy and occupied to look at the beauty of star-studded sky at night, his life is empty of joy.

In the fifth couplet the poet says a man who has no time to enjoy the beautiful smile and light gait of a beautiful damsel, is leading a meaningless life.

In the sixth couplet he says a man who can’t see the smile of a beautiful lass that originates from the eyes and travels to mouth making her beautiful, is leading a stressful life.

In the last couplet the poet says a man who has no leisure to do the above mentioned things is leading a poor life.

Appreciation 3 - Leisure Poem Appreciation

In this poem, Leisure” William Davies has criticized the worship of time and the fast moving life in the western society .Modern man is missing the beauty of nature and the charm of innumerable animate and inanimate objects.

The poet repents that the modern people have become materialistic and are sunken in their worldly and material pursuits. Moreover they are spiritually and morally hollow. While moving through the forest they have no spare time to stop and observe the beautiful squirrels, which are a part of the beauty of nature, are hiding the walnuts, in the grass.

In addition to it, they pass beside the streams; they do not observe the silvery bright waves, glittering just like the stars which twinkle in the sky in the night. So they are neglecting and missing the beauty and blessings of nature.

At the same time they have no time to amuse themselves with the beauty for lady or the glance of goddess of beauty who also contributes to the beautiful nature. They have no time to watch how marvelously her feet are moving and how her talk can enhance that magical smile which her looks sprinkles later on.

In this poem the poet personifies the beauty of nature as “a goddess of nature”, which is always charming and fascinating So, those who have no spare time to enjoy the beautiful images are unfortunate.

The main theme of this poem is that the modern has totally neglected the importance and beauty of nature and it is crystal clear that the modern man is more sensitive towards the woes and anxieties of this modern and materialistic life.

Leisure Poem

What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare ?

No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows ?

No time to see, when woods we pass
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass ?

No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night ?

No time to turn at Beauty’s glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance ?

No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began?

A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.
