Appreciation of the poem animals | Animals Poem Appreciation

In the poem "Animals" Walt Whitman admires the modesty of animals which he feels to be absent in the human race.

The poem like most of Whitman's work has an em-jammed structure with blank verses through which he characterizes the animals' uncomplicated and simple nature. Whitman discusses his need for a simpler life by presenting a desire to go and live with animals. He characterizes animals as selfless creatures which are detached from earthly desires. Animals according the poet do not whine and weep and despise their condition.

It does not even bothers to be above each other putting others below. Animals do not drown in the lust of material objects and give respect to an ancestor which might be there a thousand years before.Whitman in his words is more discussing his wish to be an animal himself. As a man who has witnessed the hazard of slavery and the outbreak of Civil War, he appears to despise the ugly nature of man which leads to suppression of their own species and destruction.

The materialistic desires and hunger for power makes one ambitious along with miserable. Whitman desires to escape this misery called man. He in plain words expresses the desire to be rather an animal than a man.In the last lines the poet wonders about the token of appreciation he got from animals but he lost them. In abstract words showing his concern for mankind who are lost and cannot find their way back to a simpler life.

Ans: Appreciation of the poem ‘Animals’  The poem ‘Animals’ has been written by the famous American poet Walt Whitman.  It has been written in a free-verse format and hence lacks a regular rhyme scheme.

The beauty of this poem is enhanced manifold using various figures of speech like  Alliteration, Antithesis, Consonance, Hyperbole, Interrogation, Metaphor,  Onomatopoeia, Repetition  and Tautology. An example of Interrogation from the  poem is “Did I pass that way huge times ago and negligently drop them?” as the  question is not asked to elicit any answer, but to stimulate the reader to think deeply  about the question.

The poem is a sarcastic take on what human beings have lost in  their craze for a materialistic life. By comparing human life to that of animals, the  poet highlights the appalling life man is presently living. Although, today, he has  made rapid strides towards progress and made himself stable, comfortable and  wealthy, he lacks many of the qualities that will make him enjoy the fruits of his  labour. He has been reduced to a dissatisfied, materialistic individual who is  ignorant of how well life should be lived.

The poem 'Animals' has been penned by Walt Whitman.

The central idea of the poem is that animals today are better than humans.

The poet has broken away from the conventional use of a rhyme scheme and has written the poem in free verse.
The chief figure of speech used in the poem is Repetition. Lines such as "They do not sweat. Do not lie awake. "They do not make me sick.. make a strong impact. expressing the qualities that humans should possess, but do not. The other figures of speech are Alliteration, Tautology. Hyperbole, etc.

A line in this poem which is my favourite is:

They bring me tokens of myself. This is a very powerful line that shows us what good qualities human beings must have possessed when they were almost like animals in the early stages of evolution and which animals still possess, while we do not.

This is a reflective poem. The language used is simple, but the tone is subtle. By describing the qualities that animals possess today, the poet indirectly implies that we human beings too should possess these qualities. The poet has used adjectives such as 'placid' and 'self-contained' to bring out the good qualities possessed by animals.

I like this poem very much because it tells us indirectly that if we want to improve human relationships we should observe and pick up qualities that animals now possess and which we might have once possessed but had carelessly given up on the path of evolution.

I think I could turn and live with animals, they are
so placid and self-contain’d
I stand and look at them long and long.

They do not sweat and whine about their condition,
They do not lie awake in the dark and weep for their sins,
They do not make me sick discussing their duty to God,
Not one is dissatisfied, not one is demented with
the mania of owning things.

Not one kneels to another, nor to his kind that
lived thousands of years ago,
Not one is respectable or unhappy over the whole earth.

So they show their relations to me and I accept them,
They bring me tokens of myself, they evince
them plainly in their possession
I wonder where they get those tokens,
Did I pass that way huge times ago and negligently drop
them?
