Appreciation - 1 [ There is another sky appreciation ]

The poem ‘There is another sky’ is written by Emily Dickinson. Emily Dickinson is America’s one of the greatest and most original poets of all time. ‘There is another sky’ is an inspirational poem. It is an pertrarchan sonnet of fourteen lines consisting of two stanzas – an octave of eight  lines and a sestet of six lines.

Through this poem, the poet addresses her younger brother, Austin, and urges him to return home. Home is depicted here as an another world, a garden, an ideal place.
The first stanza tells about the ‘other’ place and in the second stanza the poet urges her brother to return to this place. The poem emphasizes the serenity, peace and happiness surrounding one’s home. At the centre of the poem is the special sibling bond.

The theme of the poem is that happiness and gloom are the two sides of life and each one has to focus on what one desires. The lines of the poem are short and the language is simple. The poet has used inversion, hyperbole, onomatopoeia and alliteration. The poem is philosophical  in nature and the tone of the poem is encouraging and pleading.

The message of the poem is that one should not get affected by trials and tribulations of life. I like this poem for its universal appeal. Anybody can relate to the genuine emotions and feelings involved in this poem. The poem is like a call of return to one’s sibling who are profoundly missed.

She assured him not to worry since she could suggest another place, most probably their own home where they had shared many lovely moments. This poem is a sonnet comprising of fourteen lines. Like a typical Petrarchan sonnet,the first eight lines called octave, hint at a problem or express an emotional tension. The last six lines called sestet, try to resolve the problem by relieving the tension.

The poem also brings out the poet’s love for nature and here the sonnet resembles. Shakespeare’s sonnets which also has glorified nature. Central Metaphor for the entire poem is the central symbol of sky which can be blue, dark and different for different persons. But ‘There is another sky/Ever serene and fair,’’-for all and that is the sky of paradise which is blissful. Here the poet means the sky and the places around a person’s own home which will always appear comfortable.

It is possible to resort to one’s own home in the moments of weakness, frustrations and confusions. Emily’s call into this ideal world of home makes us believe that such a world really exists. That makes the poem appear so special to the readers. The message that the poet tried to convey was that one might change home or hometown, but the place called ‘home’ would never change and that was her purpose of using the expression ‘evergreen’ to convince the readers about eternal existence of one’s own comfortable home.

Thus, Emily’s undying love for her brother, Austin who was troubled by some problems, came out through her showcasing all the brightness around the place she was recommending where her brother could life under a light that never faded.

The short poem, ‘There is Another Sky’ in just two stanza, has makes us understand the importance of home where are loved ones will be the bright sunlight in every situation of our life. Emily’s way of giving solace to her brother impress me the most, as, I believe, compression and warmth can always help a troubled person by giving strength. Emily’s brother Austin also has admitted that his sister’s words has been very supportive for him by allowing him to enter into her garden of happiness and joy.

.About the poem, poet and title–
‘There is Another Sky’ is an inspirational poem with a positive message by the poet for her brother, Austin. It is a Petrarchan sonnet with an octave and a sestet. The poet is communicating to her brother through a letter. She encourages her brother not to get depressed under any circumstances and pleads to him to return home. Life is full of challenges; one can tackle the challenges with a positive attitude. The poem ends on an optimistic note.

The title of the poem ‘There is another sky’ gives a sense of optimism to the readers. ‘There is another sky’ means that there is still a better place to be happy, free and optimistic. Where the heart will not filled with darkness and melancholy.

The poet Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) is an American poet of the nineteenth century. She lived a lonely life. Most of her poems are motivational and philosophical. Her poems are the psalms and hymns of life in all its shades.

Theme –
It is an inspiring and encouraging poem which makes the reader feel happy and optimistic and give the sense of ‘never give up on your life’. She is trying to make her brother understand the same thing through the poem, who is depressed and very sad and has left home. The poem actually is an appeal made by the poet to her brother and asking him to come back home.

Poetic style, language, poetic devices used in the poem-
‘There is another sky’ is a Petrarchan sonnet of fourteen lines. The first eight lines the octave, shows the quandary or express an emotional tension. The last six lines, the sestet, try to resolve the problem by relieving the tension. The poem also brings out the poet’s love for nature. The language of the poem is quite complex and quite ornamented.

She often used slant rhymes and unconventional capitalization and punctuation. Here  in the poem also the poet has used the same technique.  The poet made use of many literary devices like Hyperbole, Alliteration, Inversion etc. Some examples of hyperbole are – “Whose leaf is ever green” and “In its unfading flowers.” Examples of Alliteration- “Never mind faded forests,” and “bright bee hum.”

Special featuresThe sonnet is quite different from those of Emily Dickinson’s other poems, which generally have a gloomy atmosphere. In this poem she is trying to give hope and positivity to her brother and asking him to come back home, where there is everything positive and never fading happiness for him. In the moments of depression, sadness and confusion, the best thing one can do is to resort to one’s own home. Emily Dickinson feels that our home is a place where there are never fading flowers, evergreen forest, and everything around is happy, because you have your own people to take care of you and make you feel better and optimistic. She makes us believe that such a world really exists. That makes the poem appear so special to the readers.

Message/values/morals in the poemThe message that the poet tried to convey is that one might leave their home or hometown, but the place called ‘home’ would never change and she tries to convince her brother as well as the readers by using the expression ‘evergreen’ to convince the readers about eternal existence of one’s own comfortable place, i.e. our home.

Thus, the poet shows us all the brightness, never fading flowers, evergreen forest, humming of bees around her home just to remind us of the importance of family and home. The poem also brings forth the undying love of the poet for her brother, Austin who was troubled by some problems.

Your opinion about the poemThis beautiful poem has taught us to be optimistic and see the brighter side in every situation. The poem has also shown usthe importance of home where our loved ones will be there in all our thicks and thins. Instead of leaving home, when depressed and sad we should try to stick around to our family so that we can get the mental support we need during those times.

Appreciation Of Poem There is Another Sky | There is another sky appreciation

There is another sky,
Ever serene and fair,
And there is another sunshine,
Though it be darkness there;
Never mind faded forests, Austin,
Never mind silent fields—
Here is a little forest,
Whose leaf is ever green;

Here is a brighter garden,
Where not a frost has been;
In its unfading flowers
I hear the bright bee hum:
Prithee, my brother,
Into my garden come!
