Appreciation - 1 | Coromandel fishers appreciation 9th
The poem is written by Sarojini Naidu. The theme of the poem is that when human beings come together for a common purpose, no force or adversary can block their way. There could be risk in any challenging enterprise, but human progress depends on facing them courageously. The fishermen in the poem prove this fact.
The rhyme scheme of the poem is ‘aabb’.
The figures of speech in the poem are simile and Metaphor.
The special feature of this poem is that it a didactic poem. It is an instructive poem which is aimed at imparting certain advice or some moral principles. “ When we come together for a common purpose and put our faith in God, we can accomplish great things. ” This is the moral principle of this poem.
My favourite lines from the poem are:
1. “He who holds the storm by the hair, will hide in his breast our lives.” This line shows the fishermen put their full faith in the sea-god.
2. “But sweeter, O brothers, the kiss of spray and the dance of the wild foam’s glee.” I like the poem because it gives a very positive message. It says that if we trust in God and do our work promptly, success is ours.

Title: The title of the poem is Coromandel Fishers.
Poet: The poem is written by ‘Sarojini Naidu.’
Rhyme scheme: The rhyme scheme of the stanza is ‘aabb’
Favourite lines: My favourite lines from the poem are:
- “Rise, brothers, rise; the wakening skies pray to the morning light,
- The wind lies asleep in the arms of the dawn like a child that has cried all night.
Theme / central idea: The poem addresses the fishermen, telling them it is early morning and time for them to wake up and set out in their boats to harvest the assets of the sea. The speaker presses the sleeping fishermen to wake up and prepare to ride the stormy waves of the sea. A life of comfort spent relaxing in the cool shade of trees – is very relaxing. But the speaker tells that a life of hard work is much better.
Figure of speech: Personification- “The wind lies asleep in the arms of the dawn like a child that has cried all night.” (Explanation – In the above line dawn has been personified as a mother.) Simile – The wind is compared to a child. Metaphor –”Sea is our mother.” Sea is compared to mother without using as’ or ‘like’
Special Features: Sarojini Naidu has started the poem with dialogue, starting “rise brothers rise”, allowing the reader to feel as though they are on the coromandel coast. The phrase literally refers to the early start of the fishermen, but can be interpreted as a beckoning call to those who wish the country’s freedom.
Why I like the Poem: This is one of the most superb poems. The beauty of nature, the audacity of the fishermen and everything has been so beautifully described. Each and every line is so meaningful. It is inspiring. I love this poem

Coromandel fishers poem
Rise, brothers, rise; the wakening skies pray to
the morning light,
The wind lies asleep in the arms of the dawn like
a child that has cried all night.
Come, let us gather our nets from the shore and
set our catamarans free,
To capture the leaping wealth of the tide, for we
are the kings of the sea!
No longer delay, let us hasten away in the track
of the sea gull’s call,
The sea is our mother, the cloud is our brother,
the waves are our comrades all.
What though we toss at the fall of the sun where
the hand of the sea-god drives ?
He who holds the storm by the hair, will hide in
his breast our lives.
Sweet is the shade of the coconut glade, and the
scent of the mango grove,
And sweet are the sands at the full o' the moon
with the sound of the voices we love;
But sweeter, O brothers, the kiss of the spray and
the dance of the wild foam’s glee;
Row, brothers, row to the edge of the verge, where
the low sky mates with the sea.
